Tombstone Tuesday - Daniel and Rachel Jones Mathias

One day back in February I was running searches for my 4th great-grandparents Daniel and Rachel Jones Mathias.  Those two have been brick wall ancestors for quite a while.

I couldn't believe it when I found them in Ohio on Find A Grave since we thought for years that Daniel died in Wales in 1837 per some other Daniel Mathias' death certificate.  I don't know which researcher latched on to the wrong Daniel so many years ago,  but I am thankful to Find A Grave contributor dhintx for helping to iron it all out. And I hereby return Daniel Mathias who died in Wales September of 1837 to his own family.

Luckily one of my distant cousins and Mathias researcher has been serving in the Family History Center in Salt Lake and had access to films and such.  She was able to find collaborating documents, namely Daniel Mathias' will and land records.  I will share them another time.

I love making new discoveries!

Sepia Saturday - Grandma's Raspberry Garden

It's been a while since I have participated in a Sepia Saturday, but I was able to sneak one in.  It took me a while to figure out which photo to use then I remembered grandma Smedley's raspberry garden.

Me, sister, and grandma Piggott

Boy do I love raspberries. Especially grandma's home grown ones. Not only did I love them with milk and sugar, but there's nothing like grandma's canned raspberries.  Sometimes she would let us pick them. And then there were the times I picked them and they went straight into my mouth.  I sure would love to have a bowl right now.

You're probably wondering why we were all dressed up. It was a Sunday so we just got back from church.  The upside down date on the top tells me that my baby brother was blessed that day.  That would also explain why grandma Piggott was at grandma Smedley's.

I kind of liked the wagon wheels too.  Would love to have them in my yard now.  I wonder what ever happened to them.

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1908 Postcard

This cool looking postcard was among the ephemera that grandma Hazel saved.  It is also one that mom kept for herself so I had to scan it with my handy magic wand while I was there last November.

The postcard was addressed to Wm C Piggott, Cokeville, Wyo, Box 51. It is postmarked Bloomington, Idaho 1908. In case you were wondering that is my great-grandpa and grandma Hazel's hubby.

For some reason the author felt the need to write on the postcard sideways. Oh, probably because he had "an awful good time" the night before.

hello old man how are
you I am back to B. L
When are you coming home
would like to see you
and have a time and more
Well write soon your
old time kid
J P H  Bloomington
                        Idaho
Not sure about the  lingo back then, but I think maybe this fellow wanted to have more "awful good times" with gramps.

I am also not sure who J P H was, but I think it's John Philip Hulme. Not sure. Just a theory.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Application For Release of Mortgaged Property

I thought I would stay with the 1940 theme in sharing my treasured family document today.  This piece of ephemera comes from my special shoe box. It is an application for release of mortgaged property.

Calvin B. Smedley and Grace E. Smedley of Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho filed or recorded in the Recorder's office of Bear Lake County, Idaho to wit:
Lien Instrument - Crop & Chattel Mortgage
Mortgage - FSA
Date of Instrument - 6-26-40
Date Filed - 8-20-40

Lien Instrument - Crop & Chattel Mortgage
Mortgage - FSA
Date of Instrument - 8-25-41
Date Filed - 9-20-41

The property released was one cow.  He sold it to R. Bekendam of California for $110 so he could pay on his FSA loan.  It was dated November 14, 1941 and signed by Henry E. Jenkins, County RR Supervisor.

My First 1940 Census Find

Well I didn't have much luck yesterday even looking at a census image.  So I finally went to bed and figured I would have better luck this morning.  I did.  I found my paternal grandparents in Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho this morning while I was drinking my morning coffee.  I hit the download button on the National Archives site and then saved the image.

I had some errands to run so I figured I would look for my maternal grandparents when I got back.  I did.  I found them in Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho.  I hit the download button and the image that popped up was not the one I was looking at.  So I had to find them again which wasn't very easy because of the server mess. I know you know what I'm talking about.

Guess what? I found a boo-boo.  The two youngest children were actually twins.  I will have to tell uncle Merrill that they made him three years older than he actually is.

So I went to check out the image I saved for my paternal grandparents and discovered that it was also the wrong one.  Guess what I'll be doing later?

Sunday's Obituary - Roger Smedley Rozzelle

September 4, 1945, pg 4

I found this obituary totally by accident Friday while I was google-ing around.

I was looking for extended Smedley family records and I was saddened to find this notice in the Salt Lake Tribune.

Poor little Roger was my 2nd cousin.  We shared the same great-grandfather, Thomas Joynes Smedley.
